This Spanish Surrealist worked in a lyrical, surrealist style suffused with sensuality and irony, in which one can see the influence of his countrymen Goya and Picasso as well as of Chagall, of whom he was a self-proclaimed admirer. Agustin Úbeda Manchego-Levers Moreno-Romero first studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in San Fernando, Spain. He received a scholarship from the French Institute in Madrid that funded his travel to Paris, where he first encountered the work of Marc Chagall. Returning to Spain, he continued to paint and teach. He was appointed professor of Fine Arts at his former school, the Escuela de San Fernando, becoming chair in 1987. Ubeda exhibited internationally with success and was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards including Young French Painter (1957) and the Grand Prize for Painting of the Circle of Fine Arts (1980). The artist's work is held in the permanent collections of museums world-wide including the Museum of the City of Paris, the Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Fe, the Museum of the City of Geneva and the Academy of Fine Arts, Madrid among others.
