PETER GOTZ PALLMANN

17¾ x 27½ Inches

Signed Lower Right, "P.G. Pallmann"

Displayed in a Hand-Rubbed, Water-Gilded, Swept Frame

Framed Dimensions: 21¼ x 31¼ x 2 Inches

A highly detailed, panoramic view of Venice's Canareggio canal showing numerous boats and gondolas moving between the ancient buildings. The artist combines the soft golden light of Canaletto with the intense, almost flame-like figures of Francesco Guardi. Gotz also shows deft and delicate handling in the tracery of the gothic building facades and in the gravitas of the great dome of Santa Maria della Salute.

Largely self-taught, this Berlin artist was forbidden by the National Socialist government to paint or exhibit from 1943-1945. Pallmann is well listed in the Vollmer supplement to Thieme-Becker and his work may be found in private and public collections including the permanent collection of the Luxemburg State museum.
