A substantial and lyrical Expressionist still-life showing a vase of scarlet flowers standing on a table with a variety of other objects.

 

William Hixson first studied art at the University of Oregon where he received a Masters degree in fine art. He subsequently studied in Paris where he received his Diploma from the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere. Hixon favored styles were abstract expressionism and, as subjects, allegorical still-life and portrait subjects which he painted in an expressionist style. Throughout a long artistic career, he exhibited internationally with success and was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards.

 

Hixson also had a successful academic career which included appointments as Professor Emeritus, University of Washington; Visiting Professor of Art, University of Victoria, Victoria, B.C., Canada; and Director of Overseas Programs in Provence, France, for the School of Art, University of Washington. The artist's paintings are held in the permanent collections of numerous museums including Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, Washington; J.P. Haydon Memorial Museum, Pago Pago, American Samoa; Tacoma Art Museum, Tacoma, Washington and the Tupper Museum, Orlando, Florida among others.
