KARL HARALD ALFRED BROGE
(Danish, 1870-1955)
THE RECITAL
Oil on Canvas
32¾ x 26½ Inches
Signed, Lower Left, "Alf. Broge"
and Dated "1918"
Alfred Broge first studied with Helger Gronvold and, later, at Denmark's Royal Academy with Rudolf Bissen (1889-1891). Broge initially achieved recognition for a series of sunlit summer landscapes before embarking on a long and successful career as a figural and genre painter. With all his subjects, however, he showed particular interest the subtle and consistent effects of light within the composition. Additionally, as in the case of this present work, Broge was a master of developing atmospheric intensity through the subtle use of chiaroscuro. Alfred Broge painted and exhibited with success throughout Europe and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. (Paris Salon, 1922-1926; Charlottenborg, 1892; Aarhus 1909. Danish Art Union, 1921; Bergenholz, 1923). The artist is listed in all relevant art reference works including Benezit's Dictionary of Painters and Thieme-Becker's Lexicon of Artists.
