EJNAR ROEPSTORFF KRAGH

(Danish, 1903-1981)

THE PONT NEUF, PARIS, 1950

Oil on Canvas

23½ x 29 Inches

Signed Lower Left "Ejnar R. Kragh"

A substantial, mid-century Impressionist oil showing a view of Paris with a figure strolling beside the Seine.

Born in Denmark, Kragh worked for several years as a silversmith before turning to painting in the mid 1920's. Trips to France fueled his passion for the art of landscape and his love of the Post-Impressionists, although his abiding inspiration came from his Danish towns and beaches, particularly the small fishing village of Gudhjem where he made his summer home. He depicted these places with an expressionistic use of color and light, a style exemplified in this view of the artist's adopted city. Kragh exhibited widely and with success both in Denmark and throughout Europe, including in Paris (1925) and at Copenhagen's Charlottenborg Palace (1939).
