Born in Shanghai, Nora Frenkel spent much of her childhood in France and the United States. From an early age, she was drawn to artistic studies and first attended New York's specialized High School for Music and Art. She subsequently studied at the Cooper Union Art School and the Cranbrook Academy of Art before completing her formal training at Smith College where she received a degree in painting and printmaking. This strong foundation in European and American artistic traditions would deeply influence her later work in Tel Aviv.
In 1960, Frenkel immigrated with her family to Israel, where she became part of her new country’s vibrant art and design scene. Her formal teaching career began in 1975, when she joined the faculty of Shenkar College. At Shenkar, Frenkel taught painting and drawing to textile and fashion design students. In her years there, she became a beloved mentor revered both for her warmth and for her ability to connect that world of formal education with Tel Aviv's bohemian artistic circles.
Nora Frenkel exhibited her work widely and with success including at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, the Museum of the Negev in Beersheba and the Bat Yam Museum, among others. Her paintings are held in leading private and public collections including in the permanent collections of the Israel Museum and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Nora Frenkel is listed in standard art reference works including Who Was Who in American Art.
We are pleased to offer substantial and dynamic abstract, painted when Frenkel was thirty-five.
