Born in Kochi City, Tsuneo Takashima graduated from the Tokyo Higher Normal School Arts Department in 1944. By 1948, he was exhibiting at the Sogenkai, the National Art Center in Tokyo and, in 1951, at the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition where he continued to exhibit for many years. In 1952, he received the Sogenkai award for 'Mother and Child' and, the following year, was elected to membership of the Sogenkai. During this period, he also began to work in three dimensions and, subsequently, was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards, both for his paintings and his sculptures. In the late 1950's and early 1960's, Takashima traveled frequently to Europe where he continued to paint and exhibit with success, spending time in Italy and, particularly, in the South of France. In 1968, he traveled and exhibited in the United States and was the subject of a successful one-man exhibition in San Francisco. We are pleased to offer this lyrical view of Venice, painted when the artist was forty-six years old.
