Born in Fresno in 1913, James March Phillips first studied in San Francisco at the Jean Turner Art Academy. He later studied under Louis J. Rogers, Alfred Owles, and J. Paget Fredricks. Essentially a lyrical realist, Phillips attempted to portray subjects in their true form and color. An avid outdoorsman, he also painted many fine watercolor landscapes of the Monterey Peninsula, with his paintings of Pebble Beach Golf Links and Cypress Point Club finding particular favor. Phillips exhibited widely and with success and his paintings are held in collections across the United States.
