Born in Berlin, Margit Omar moved to the USA at the age of eleven. She first studied art at the University of Colorado at Boulder and, subsequently, at the University of North Dakota with the figurative painter, Robert Nelson. She later studied under Ray Yoshida at the Art Institute of Chicago before returning to the University of Colorado to complete her MFA in 1971. In 1977, Omar won the LACMA Young Talent Award and the museum purchased the first of her paintings now in its collection. Over the course of a long career, she has exhibited widely and with success, both at solo and group shows, including for the Fellows of Contemporary Art (1985) with Richard Diebenkorn and Ed Moses. For almost forty years, Margit Omar also taught drawing and painting at the University of Southern California. Her work is held in the permanent collections of national museums including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Nomad, 1977; California Suite; Adelanto) and the Museum of Contemporary Art (The High Desert Series, Joshua, 1977; Sometimes In Our Dreams We See Too Clearly, 1983).

 

In her 1990 multimedia work, 'Oases of Dreams: Phrases and Sequences', the artist inscribed these words, “Human beings require both space and place. Human lives are a dialectical movement between shelter and venture, attachment and freedom.”
