Patricia Hagen is an American painter recognized for her disciplined approach to form and structure and for a career spanning more than three decades of consistent exhibition. Born in Portland, Oregon, Hagen received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Miami University of Ohio in 1978 and her Master of Fine Arts with Distinction from the California College of the Arts in Oakland in 1994, where she studied under members of the Bay Area figurative and abstract schools. Her academic grounding in drawing and color theory provided the foundation for a methodical painting practice that combines careful observation with a restrained sense of design.

Hagen’s early work focused on cellular and biological imagery—bacteria, viruses, and microscopic formations—painted with fine tonal control and a near-scientific precision. Her first solo exhibition, Between Then and Now, was held at the Sherry Frumkin Gallery in Santa Monica in 1996, followed by Treading Anxious Waters at R. B. Stevenson Gallery in San Diego in 1997. After relocating to Seattle, she exhibited widely in the region, including Virus (The Stalk Exchange, 2003), Fragile Attachments (Bryan Ohno Gallery, 2005), and Schema (Punch Gallery, 2007), developing a personal idiom that merged natural observation with controlled abstraction.

By the late 2000's, Hagen had expanded her subjects to larger organic systems, reflected in exhibitions such as Fragile Balance (2008), Fullness Passing (2009), and Spill (2010), all at Punch Gallery, Seattle. Her work was selected for New American Paintings and acquired by the King County Arts Collection. Subsequent solo exhibitions—Approaching Awe at i.e. Gallery, Edison (2017), Solace and Witness at Linda Hodges Gallery, Seattle (2018, 2021), and Biophilia at i.e. Gallery (2024)—confirmed her standing as a consistent and serious studio painter.

Hagen has been awarded residencies at the Jentel Foundation in Banner, Wyoming, and at Willapa Bay AiR in Oysterville, Washington (both 2019). Her most recent exhibition, Into the Woods at Northwind Art Center, Port Townsend (2025), continued her long engagement with the visual order of the natural world interpreted through balanced composition and tonal harmony. Pat Hagen's paintings are represented in public and private collections throughout the United States, and she remains active in the Pacific Northwest, building on her strong record of exhibition and critical recognition.
