In 1954, she married the artist Philip Freeman and settled in Dana Point where she became a member of the Laguna Beach Art Association and was, subsequently, juried into the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts.

Over the course of a fifty-year career as a painter and ceramicist, Jean Freeman exhibited widely and with success including at the Festival of Arts, California Design 8, the Pasadena Art Museum and, regularly, at the Laguna Beach Art Association where she served as selection committee chairwoman. Freeman was also a respected teacher who served for many years as Associate Professor of Art at Saddleback Community College.
