Johann Berthelsen was a member of the Salmagundi Club, the American Watercolor Society and the Allied Artists of America. He exhibited widely and with success including at the Art Institute of Chicago and was the recipient of numerous awards and prizes including the Erskine Prize (Chicago, 1928) and the Holcombe Prize (Indianapolis, 1946). The artist's work is held in numerous private and public collections including in the permanent collections of the Hickory Museum of Art, the Terre Haute Museum, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Sheldon Swope Art Museum, and the Butler Institute of American Art, among others.

 

The artist is listed in all relevant art reference books including Who's Who in American Art, which provides a signature sample.
