IRMA LEISINGER ENGEL
(German-American, born 1908)
PROMENADE DES ANGLAIS, NICE
Oil on Canvas
15 x 22 Inches
Signed Lower Right
Born in Germany, Engel studied in Paris with Andre Lhote and later at the Berlin Academy under Carl Hofer. She exhibited widely and with much success at the Salon D’Automne, Paris (1926), New York World’s Fair (1939), Golden Gate International Exposition (1939), and at solo exhibitions including the San Francisco Museum of Art (1939). Her lyrical style, of which this landscape is a fine example, blends the Post-Impressionism of her French period with the darker and more defined influence of German Expressionism.
