(British, fl.1871-1916)
TWINS
Oil on Canvas
30 x 25 Inches
Signed Lower Left and Dated '76
Framed in a Period Hand-Carved Gilt-wood Frame

Born Mary Lemon Fowler, this noted artist painted under this name in 1871 and, subsequently, under her married name. Exhibiting widely and with great success, Waller showed at all the major London galleries including over forty times at the Royal Academy, where she was the recipient of numerous prizes. An accomplished genre painter, she specialized in elegantly casual portraits of children which often transcended the genre of portraiture to assume significance as character study. Mary Lemon Waller is well-listed in all relevant art dictionaries and her work is highly sought-after at auction.  We are pleased to offer this early and characteristic example of Waller's work, which shows her intuitive ability to penetrate beneath the surface of her subject.
