Francis Augustus Todhunter first studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute with Arthur Mathews and subsequently with Gottardo Piazzoni and Frank Van Sloun at the California School of the Fine Arts and at The Art Students League in New York. A prolific artist, he particularly favored seascapes and landscapes and, after viewing the 1913 Armory Show in New York, he became an early and ardent exponent of Modernist principles. Todunter was a member of The Bohemian Club and The San Francisco Art Association, exhibiting frequently there and also at The Golden Gate International Exhibition [1915]. We are pleased to offer this lyrical and exquisitely composed seascape by a notable American modernist.
